iTunes U and iBooks 2 Files Contain iPad 3 Retina Images!

Apple launched its latest iOS app, iBook 2, at the Education Event held in New York Yesterday. With a brand new app come new speculations about the next generation iPad (rumored to be loaded with highly improved display). iPad retina images have been found in iBooks 2 files and these point towards Apple planning to release an iPad that has retina-like display quality.

Have a look:

The above image shows “@2X.png”, which signifies (not with absolute certainty)  display with twice the resolution is on its way.that a display with twice the resolution is on its way.

Well, this is not the first time that iPad specific double resolution images have been found. Last January, iBooks 1.2 was also found to contain references to 2X iPad mages, which made people to think that the company will be taking a huge leap in terms of resolution of its iPad (as it did with iPhone). Images (resolution of 2048×1536) were also discovered in iOS 5 Beta last year in summer.

See the difference between a regular and @2X images in sample iPad app your self:

An iPad with double-resolution will maintain a pixel density of 164 ppi, which would be lesser than 300 ppi (required for retina display) and 326 ppi (used in iPhone 4). However, it would be a major improvement over the current generation iPad (resolution of 1024×768 and pixel density of 132 ppi).
