iPad 3 To Be Backlit With Dual LED Support

The Cupertino giant has left no stone unturned in terms of technology patents. Patent files are lined up with Apple’s patents dating last year’s end. Many are associated with new developments in existing features and are big enough for the incorporating handset to be called next generation device. A recent report that talks of a dual OLED backlighting system for future iPads has surfaced. This is a major leak among the three others; with integrated speaker clip for iPod Nano and the third one which claims of new hold and swipe gestures for iOS devices.

DigiTimes reported Apple has filed for a new alternative backlighting system patent that is based on a dual LED light bar design for iPad 3. It is possible that the company extends it to its other future devices as well; iPhone, Cinema Display, MacBook and iMac. The report doesn’t forget to mention a clause, Apple talks of “television in passing” in the patent application after recollecting DuPont’s announcement on new AMOLED processing technology. The form says this technology is already being provided to Asian AMOLED manufacturers. A plus of this design layout is it will help making of a thinner tablet.

How Will Backlighting Help?

To employ this feature in iPad 3, Apple might have to adopt LCD panels with higher resolutions 2048×1536 pixels. This can be achieved if the existing single LED light bar in iPad 2 is improved. And for this Apple team is considering two propositions offered by vendors of the technology.

  • One idea is to keep the light piece in a single-bar form feature but with two LED chips within.
  • Second idea is to use dual LED light bars. It is predicted by a source from Taiwanese supply chain that Apple would go for this design. And why so? Probably because the manufacturers announced they solved the heat dissipation and battery consumption issue with backlight technology.

If iPad 3 comes with improved backlight support its display will look wonderful. Gaming will be much more fun with iPad 3 and realistic visual effects. Also it is being suspected that dual LED system will help reducing tablet’s thickness. in a way backlighting is a desired feature.

As of this recent development iPad 3 release seems to have moved back sometime around the end of 2011 fourth quarter. However, Apple has not spilled a word yet.
